Benefits of Cannabidiol for Treatment-Resistant Epilepsy

There are many cannabidiol (CBD) studies highlighting the compound’s efficacy in treating various neurological disorders. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the other major cannabinoid in marijuana well-known for inducing anxiety and other psychological symptoms – CBD is non-psychoactive.

One of the most studied is the use of CBD as a treatment for Dravet-syndrome, a form of childhood epilepsy that often fails to respond to anti-epileptic drugs or other available treatments. According to research published in The Lancet Neurology, as well as Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, CBD can decrease the frequency of seizures in children with treatment-resistant epilepsy. A meta-analysis (looking at over 36 different studies) show that CBD 20 mg/day was more effective than placebo at reducing seizure frequency by 50%+. CBD was more effective than placebo at achieving complete seizure freedom and improving quality of life. When looking at 17 observational studies, 48.5% of patients reported 50%+ reductions in seizures; in 14 observational studies, 8.5% were seizure-free.

This is obviously great news, and the fact that more and more large-scale studies are being done with CBD is greatly encouraging. There is still much work to be done on educating the public on the subject, and studies like this will go a long way to achieving that goal. Then we will be able to break free of Big Pharma and their toxic “treatments” for good!
