The Healing Power of Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper belongs to the Capsicum family. It is the red or green chilli pepper that is used to add spicy flavour to foods throughout the world. Cayenne contains numerous vitamins such as; vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin K, carotenoids and the full B complex. It is also a source of calcium, potassium, manganese, and dietary fibre. It has been used therapeutically by the Chinese and American cultures for centuries. So what exactly are the health benefits of this common spice?

  1. Promotes Heart Health -Studies have shown that Cayenne pepper reduced serious heart arrhythmias and improved cardiac blood flow. Further studies have found that capsaicin stops heart attacks within seconds, due to the capsaicin opening the arteries in heart.

  2. Improves Blood Circulation -Cayenne pepper is also good to help maintain general blood circulation, thus keeping blood pressure lower.

  3. Good for the Stomach -Traditional Chinese medicine has used cayenne pepper for stomach troubles for centuries. By stimulating stomach secretions it can help to reduce gas and cramps.

  4. Anti-Bacterial -A study published in the Journal Infectious Diseases & Therapy found antimicrobial properties in chilli peppers. These properties allow it to be used to prevent food contamination.

  5. Topical Remedy –Topically cayenne has been used to treat a number of aliments including snake bites, rheumatism, sores, and wounds. It is used to treat arthritis by irritating the effected area, and distracting the nerves from joint pains.

  6. Cancer prevention -This amazing benefit is thanks to a process known as apoptosis (programmed cell death). Multiple studies have found capsaicin kills cancer cells in both the pancreas and the lungs.

  7. Detoxification -Cayenne pepper can also induce sweating, which is a natural way to detox the body. This is again thanks the circulatory stimulating effects of the capsaicin.

  8. Antifungal properties -Studies have found that a compound in cayenne pepper suppressed the development of 16 different fungal strains, while remaining non-toxic to animal cells.

  9. Hair Growth -This one may seem surprising, but if you have poor bood circulation your hair does not grow as well.  As we’ve mentioned, cayenne pepper is great at getting the blood flowing.  It won’t cure your hereditary baldness, but it might just give your hair some of the life it’s been missing!

So what’s the best way to get the benefits of cayenne? A simple cayenne pepper tea works great! Simply mix a teaspoon of cayenne pepper into a cup of hot water, add lemon and/or honey to taste. However, because this pepper does increase blood flow, people who have trouble clotting or are going in for surgery should use caution.
